What Are We Doing?

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthodontics First Approach

The orthodontic process, which is the first stage of orthognathic surgery, aims to bring the teeth to the ideal position before surgery. At this stage, the orthodontist uses braces or appliances to prepare the correct bite of the jaws by aligning the teeth. Orthodontic treatment allows the jaw bones to be moved correctly during surgery, helping to achieve an optimal bite after surgery.

Surgical Approach First

The Surgical First approach allows orthognathic surgery to be performed directly without the need for prior orthodontic treatment. This approach is ideal for patients with properly aligned teeth but skeletal discrepancy between the maxilla and mandible. In particular, facial asymmetry, mandibular retrognathia (Class II), mandibular prognathism (Class III) and sleep apnoea can be treated with this method. In this way, patients are exempted from long orthodontic processes before surgery.

3D-Planned Surgery

Virtual planning in orthognathic surgery allows preoperative evaluation of the jaw bones and teeth with digital three-dimensional models. This method allows the surgeon to plan more precisely and predict surgical outcomes. It can also show the patient what the postoperative appearance will be like. This digital planning process contributes to a shorter surgical time and more predictable results.
When is orthognathic surgery performed?

When do I need a specialist doctor's opinion?

Difficulty chewing or biting: If you have difficulty chewing or biting food properly due to the lower jaw being in front and/or the upper jaw being behind, it may be necessary to correct the bite.

Facial Asymmetry: If you are experiencing visually noticeable facial asymmetry, it may be the result of a deformity in the jaw or face and in this case you may need orthognathic surgery.

Speech Problems: Misalignment of the jaws can affect tongue and lip position, which can lead to speech problems. If you cannot pronounce words clearly.

Respiratory Problems During Sleep: If you snore frequently, stop breathing or have difficulty breathing during sleep, you may have obstructive sleep apnoea. In this case, jaw advancement surgery can correct your breathing problems.

Chronic Jaw Pain: If you are experiencing persistent jaw pain, especially if your jaw movements are limited or there are clicking or crunching sounds when moving the jaw, you may need jaw surgery to address the underlying problems.
